Some time ago during a training in Mexico led by one of the legends of MLM industry I heard something that stuck in my head for years and caused my true WHY came out of the shadows. I realized that people are not buying what you do, but WHY you do it. Simon Sinek formulated this even more emphatically: The goal is not to do business with anyone who needs it, the goal is to do business with people who believe in what you believe.
Before going to Mexico, during the meetings when I presented a lot of impressive in my opinion figures, the strategy of the company, I described the products in detail, I was surprised that my interlocutor did not shout enthusiastically: I go into it! He rather grumbles and closes in himself.
But when I began to talk about my goal of breaking away from my daily work-and-retirement credit system, which I might not even be able to get, then in a certain group I began to hear: Then let’s do it!
Why did this happen? Suddenly people looking at me started to see themselves in my enthusiasm and my perspective.
I was once invited to a 1: 1 meeting. I went out of curiosity, but also to see the “competition” and have a chance to present mine solution. When I asked a young man sitting in front of my why he was doing this business he said he wanted to buy a very expensive car. And then something strange happened. I felt despondent. My interlocutor did not convince me either to himself or to his business. Later I asked myself why this happened? The man wanted to have an exclusive car that everyone will admire. What’s wrong with that? He and his team were working for a paycheck, but is it possible that a motive like that will ever be able to bring down the house? Perhaps, I, unfortunately, will not follow. We had nothing in common.
Inadequate WHY is as pernicious as its lack and sometimes works, but only for a short time. My WHY was the widely understood need for freedom and the need to constantly enlarge the community of people who thought alike. Together with the team, we formed a community for which our company was a tool for getting freedom and independence. We talked about it straight ahead and people who believed in the same ideas as us worked with commitment and did not burn out after a few unsuccessful meetings. They had something I would now call a spirit and all thanks to the right reason.
I will repeat again after Simon Sinek:
People do not buy what you do, people buy why you do it. If you attract those who believe in what you believe, you will get where you are going. Your goals, your WHY will also be their purpose and their WHY.
Here are some good WHYs I’ve heard recently. It will be great if WHY will be a solution:
- My WHY is to make people aware of the need for supplementation and to make them realize, that our lives and health are in our hands. My WHY is to promote awareness and good lifestyle.
- My WHY is financial security for me and my family. It’s a quicker repayment of housing loans and the ability to educate my children.
- My WHY, even though I have not graduated from college, is the ability to manage my life, not to be managed. Work when I want, with who I want and where I want, and show others that they can live and earn as they desire and as much as they need.
If you are an individual who likes to have control over everything what is going on in your life. Over finances, morning wake ups, and even the lunch break, I have a suggestion for you: create your own WHY, so strong that you can’t sit still. As someone said at one of the training: My why makes me cry.
